In an effort to strengthen local governance, accountability, and transparency, Nkoranza South Municipal Assembly in the Bono East region held a Town Hall Meeting on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, in the Municipal Assembly Hall in Nkoranza.
Advocates for Community Alternatives (ACA), a non-profit group with a longstanding relationship with the Municipal Assembly, provided funding for the Town Hall meeting. Mr. Frederick Akitty, the Municipal Coordinating Director, stated that the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies are required by law to hold Town Hall meetings at least twice a year in order to give the local population a chance to interact with representatives of the District Assembly regarding the Assembly’s Public Financial Management and service delivery results. He gave ACA credit for helping to organize the gathering.
The Municipal Planning Officer and the Budget Officer took turns to explain the projects executed by the Assembly in 2024 as well as the revenues generated or accrued during the period. The projects executed by the Assembly during the period under review were mainly in the areas of education, health, agriculture, economic empowerment and infrastructural development.
Participants were allowed to engage management of the Assembly on issues of concern. Majority of the questions centered on the poor financial performance of the Assembly and the Fulani menace. There were also some issues about some market intermediaries at the Nkoranza market whose activities are adversely affecting especially the farmers. The Municipal Coordinating Director, the Municipal Planning Officer and the Budget Officer took turns to address the concerns raised.
The Town Hall Meeting offered a valuable opportunity for residents to engage with Management of the Assembly and discuss important community issues. Participants were enthused about the success of the meeting and how impactful it has been.
